Sate of the District 2013State of the District

Superintendent Hickey shared with the entire staff the annual State of the District, one of his many communication tools. Mr. Hickey spoke of the amazing resilience we have as a district, the financial status of the district, our privilege of working in the WLS community, and our thanks to the community that supports us and our events. Superintendent Hickey also talked of C.A.S.E.--copy and steal everything that benefits kids. What a year it's been! [ video ]

 

Corbin HaasWhitmer Senior Corbin Haas

Whitmer senior Corbin Haas is being deployed with the Army National Guard on June 8 and will miss the graduation ceremony. He was awarded his diploma during a special portion of the senior assembly. Thank you, Corbin, and all of our seniors who will be serving in the military after graduation.

Art ShowElementary Art Show at Spring Musical

Elementary and junior high art teachers selected artwork from students in grades 1-8 to be displayed at the spring musical, "Fiddler on the Roof." This is an annual art show where the beautiful work from our young artists can be viewed. Washington Local has a commitment to the fine arts, and we're extremely proud of our elementary students and our Whitmer artists who continually dominate the Scholastic Art Show, Focus Art Show, and Congressional Art Show. RCA AttendeesTeachers Attend Ron Clark Academy

Fifty-six WLS teachers recently attended the Ron Clark Academy (RCA), the largest teacher training site in the United States, so they could see the amazing and replicable rigor, climate and culture, and student engagement. At the May 2013 Board of Education meeting, Superintendent Hickey shared data from some of the 18,000 teachers worldwide who have already attended RCA. [ Supt. Hickey comments ] [ view pictures ]

 

PEACJackman Hosts Program to Educate All Cyclists

Jackman Elementary hosted the Program to Educate All Cyclists (PEAC). The program teaches children with special needs to ride on bikes that are adapted for their needs. Some ride on a tandem bike with an adult. [ view pictures ]

IOO participants (1)Infinite Opportunity Olympics

The second annual Infinite Opportunity Olympics (I.O.O.) was held on Saturday, May 4, 2013 at Whitmer Memorial Stadium. I.O.O. is an athletic event for our children with special needs. Athletes competed in track and field activities, assisted by Whitmer High School students. Whitmer's band and cheerleaders were part of the opening ceremony which concluded with the Lighting of the Torch. Over 70 athletes competed in this year's event and over 100 student and staff volunteers assisted.

 

Honor Flight 2013 Honor Flight

Honor Flight Northwest Ohio continues to fulfill dreams for World War II Veterans by sending them to Washington, D.C. to see memorials built in their honor. Superintendent Hickey, Assistant Superintendent Mourlam, and board member Steve Zuber served as Guardians for the April 30th trip. The Panther football team assisted in the send-off and welcome home for our Veterans at Toledo Express Airport, Grand Aire Hangar. Pictured is Superintendent Hickey who was the Honor Flight Guardian for World War II Veteran Hank Goscinski.

 

Whitmer Artists Excel at
Congressional Art Show

Fourteen Whitmer students had art featured in the 2013 Congressional Art Show at the University of Findlay April 18-20. The show only had four winners and Whitmer students received TWO of those FOUR awards: First Place (Dana Richards) and Honorable Mention Runner-up (Ashley Armstrong). Congratulations to our winners and all the students who had art displayed.

Senior Citizen Athletic Passes

Washington Local School District residents who are 60 years old or older may obtain a free athletic pass that provides free entry to any home football, basketball, wrestling, volleyball or soccer game. Passes can be obtained at ticket booths at the game or in room 108 at Whitmer. Contact Carma Donati at 419-473-8433 for more information.

Summer Lunch Program
Washington Local Schools has partnered with the U.S. Department of Agriculture to serve free meals this summer to ANY child from 0-18 years old. There are no income or residency requirements. Lunches are served Monday through Friday from 11:00-12:00 in the Greenwood cafeteria, 760 Northlawn Drive. Please contact Deb Warren at 419-473-8458 for more information.

Elementary Cross Country 2013
Washington Local Elementary Cross Country is back for 2013 for students in grades 1st-6th. The registration fee is $15 and each runner gets a shirt, a ribbon after each meet, and an end of the year medal. Practices for each school and district wide meets will be announced soon. Please look up Washington Local Elementary Cross Country on Facebook for more updates.

The junior high and high school cross country teams are hosting a Running Camp at Powertrain Park June 25-28 from 9am-11am. Camp fee is $30 and includes a shirt, water bottle and award for the end of the camp race. Junior high and high school athletes and coaches will be putting on the camp. Topics such as stretching, nutrition, running mechanics and race strategy will be discussed.

Both running camp and cross country registration forms and fees are due 5/31.

Sixth Annual Whitmer Football Golf Scramble
The Sixth Annual Whitmer Football Golf Scramble will be Saturday, July 20, 2013. The golf outing will be at the Tamaron Country Club with an 8:00 AM shotgun start! Tee-Off "Fore" Kids Golf Outing
The 28th Annual Tee-Off "Fore" Kids Golf Outing will be held on Friday, July 26, at Bedford Hills Golf Course. The outing, sponsored by Brondes Ford Toledo, is for amateurs only. Proceeds benefit the district's Infinite Opportunity Olympics, student substance abuse prevention, and other WLS student activity programs.
